How It Works
A planning target, not a magic minimum
The finder begins with the species baseline used throughout this site. Bird count changes the recommendation and warnings, but the tool does not invent a universal multiple-bird formula. The optional footprint check shows whether your available space can accommodate the baseline.
Cage shape, door gaps, feeder doors, bar strength, and interior layout still matter. Use the result to narrow the market, then verify the current manufacturer's specifications before buying.
Housing principles are cross-checked against guidance from the Association of Avian Veterinarians and VCA Animal Hospitals.

The tool does not calculate a precise multiple-bird minimum because no single formula works across species, individual birds, and social dynamics. It instead flags that multiple birds need substantially more room, multiple resource areas, and a backup separation plan.
Why does the tool ask for cage width and depth?
Retail listings often emphasize height, but usable floor footprint usually tells you more about movement space. The optional room check compares your available footprint with the planning target before seed guards and door clearance.
